Descript pricing starts at $0 and runs to $65 per person a month. The paid plans are Hobbyist ($24 a month, or $16 billed annually), Creator ($35, or $24) and Business ($65, or $50), and each one caps media hours and AI credits. Descript is best for editing your own recordings by editing their text. Skip it if you only need to study other people's short videos: ViralDrop, a Descript alternative for short-form research, reads a public link and explains why the video worked, from $9 a month.
Checked on both sites on September 30, 2026. Descript pricing per month is per person, before tax.

Descript sells four self-serve plans and an Enterprise plan. All of them are priced per editor, so a team of three on Creator pays three times.
Free ($0). One hour (60 minutes) of media a month, 100 AI credits that do not renew, export at 720p and two hours of recording in Rooms, its remote recording studio. The AI tools are marked "Limited". No card is needed to start.
Hobbyist ($24 a month, or $16 a month billed annually). 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month, watermark-free 1080p export, Underlord (Descript's AI co-editor), Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Create Clips, voice clones and five hours a month of Rooms recording. One person only.
Creator ($35, or $24 billed annually). 30 media hours and 800 AI credits a month, 4K export, full access to Underlord and more AI tools, video generation, the stock media library and top-ups when you run out. It scales to a team of three, each seat billed separately.
Business ($65, or $50 billed annually). 40 media hours and 1,500 AI credits a month, Brand Studio for shared templates, translation and dubbing with a proofread step, custom avatars and priority support with an SLA. Up to five people.
Enterprise is priced by sales and adds SSO, SCIM, audit logs and custom retention.
The number on the pricing page depends on the billing toggle. Descript says annual billing saves up to 35%, and on September 30, 2026 the gap looked like this:
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed annually, per month | Billed annually, per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hobbyist | $24 | $16 | $192 |
| Creator | $35 | $24 | $288 |
| Business | $65 | $50 | $600 |
The yearly totals are our arithmetic from the monthly figures on the page. They are per person, before tax.
The real cost is set by media hours. Descript counts every minute you import or record, whether or not you transcribe it. A creator who records a weekly one-hour podcast and imports the raw camera files for it can pass the 10 hours of Hobbyist in a month. AI credits are the second meter: Underlord, Studio Sound, Green Screen, Eye Contact and generated media all draw on them. When either runs out on Creator or Business, you can buy a top-up; on Hobbyist you upgrade.
ViralDrop meters differently. There are no media hours and no per-seat price: a plan is a monthly pool of credits, and each action on a video spends some of it. Unused plan credits roll over while you stay subscribed, up to two months' worth, so a quiet month is not lost.
Three things push a Descript bill up.
Seats. Every plan is per person. Adding an editor to Creator adds a full Creator price, and Creator stops at three people, so a growing team lands on Business.
Raw footage. Multi-camera shoots, long screen recordings and second takes all count as media hours. The 40 hours of Business go faster than they sound when every guest records a separate track.
Features locked higher up. 4K export starts on Creator. Brand Studio, translation and dubbing, and custom avatars are on Business. If one of those is the reason you picked Descript, the entry price is not your price.
On the other side, Descript offers special rates for students, educators and non-profits through a form on its pricing page, and you can cancel from your subscription page at any time.
A workload many short-form teams have: transcribe 30 one-minute competitor videos a month and figure out which hooks worked. Prices checked on September 30, 2026.
| Tool | Cheapest plan that covers it | What you still do by hand |
|---|---|---|
| Descript | Free: 30 minutes fit in 60 media minutes, if you download each video and upload the file | Get the files, read every transcript, find the hook yourself |
| Riverside | Pro, $29 a month or $24 billed annually, lists unlimited transcriptions | Riverside is built to record and edit your own sessions |
| ViralDrop | Starter at $9: each transcript costs 2 credits | Nothing for the transcript; an analysis explains the hook |
For transcripts alone on this workload, Descript's free plan is cheaper. The difference is the last column: Descript starts from a file on your computer, and its pricing page lists no feature that explains why a video did well. ViralDrop takes the public link and, for 5 credits, breaks the video into hook, body and call to action.
Paste a public short video you have seen take off. New accounts get free welcome credits to see the breakdown.
Descript does not list a time-limited trial. Its Free plan is the way to try it: 60 media minutes a month, 100 one-time AI credits and 720p export, and its pricing page says no credit card is needed.
Descript is worth the cost if you edit your own recordings every week, because text-based editing and Studio Sound save real hours. If you rarely edit, the monthly media-hour and AI-credit caps mean you pay for capacity you do not use.
It depends on the job. For recording remote guests in high quality, Riverside is built around that; see how Descript and Riverside compare. For researching competitors' short videos rather than editing your own, ViralDrop explains the hook and structure of any public link.
Descript suits talking-head and podcast edits, because you cut video by editing its transcript. CapCut, which has desktop, online and mobile editors with templates and auto captions, suits quick social edits. Many creators use one of each.
On September 30, 2026, Descript Hobbyist cost $24 a month, Creator $35 and Business $65 per person, billed monthly. Billed annually they came to $16, $24 and $50 a month.
